Locally Hosted Supabase

Perform the following steps to install and run a locally hosted Supabase stack. Supabase can be installed on your local host or on a separate server. I will attempt to document installing on both a local Mac and a remote Ubuntu Linux host.

Steps:

Install Docker and Docker-compose:

On Mac:

Download the Docker Desktop application from Docker website. Choose the "Download Docker Desktop" button and select the correct "Download for Mac" item.

Once downloaded, locate the .dmg file and double click on it and drag the file into applications.

On Ubuntu:

Run following commands on server to update and upgrade ubuntu

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade -y

Next run the commands below, to get Docker and setup for {user} (swap {user} with user who needs permissions to run docker)

curl -fsSL https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu/gpg | sudo gpg --dearmor -o /usr/share/keyrings/docker-archive-keyring.gpg
echo "deb [arch=$(dpkg --print-architecture) signed-by=/usr/share/keyrings/docker-archive-keyring.gpg] https://download.docker.com/linux/ubuntu $(lsb_release -cs) stable" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/docker.list > /dev/null
sudo usermod -aG docker {user}

Install the Supabase stack from github.

On both Mac and Ubuntu run the following commands. The commands will clone the supabase repository and create a directory for the Supabase project.

git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/supabase/supabase
mkdir supabase-project
cd supabase-project

Copy the following docker-compose file and add to docker-compose.yml into the supabase-project folder/directory.

# Usage
# Start: docker compose up
# With helpers: docker compose -f docker-compose.yml -f ./dev/docker-compose.dev.yml up
# Stop: docker compose down
# Destroy: docker compose -f docker-compose.yml -f ./dev/docker-compose.dev.yml down -v --remove-orphans
# Reset everything: ./reset.sh
